Three plants we’re loving

Quiet favourites from the shelf this month and why each of them would settle happily into your balcony in Bangkok, whatever light you've got.

Balcony gardening in this city is its own discipline, the heat is relentless, the humidity swings with the rains, and the light is often borrowed from a neighbouring building rather than direct. But some plants can thrive in it.

1. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

The one that needs no introduction. This is a really easy one that forgives missed waterings, tolerates low light, and grows fast enough to feel rewarding. It is a nice trailing plant. Place it on a shelf or train it up a small trellis.

2. Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Underrated and very generous plant. It produces pups you can pot on and give away. It likes bright indirect light but manages in softer corners too.

3. Snake plant (Sansevieria)

If you've got a shady spot in your balcony or room, this plant would be suitable. It requires little watering and even less attention.
